BREBEMI-TEEM interconnection - Bergamo junction, Brescia, Milan - Itlay

The project linking Brescia - Bergamo - Milan (abbreviated to Brebemi) by motorway was born in the late 1990s in response to a local need for mobility along the main route connecting the metropolitan system of Milan with one of Italy’s main manufacturing zones – the area of Bergamo and Brescia.
After years of study, the current solution was selected as the best answer to the need for transport for the area and its inhabitants, as well as the best solution to implement the indications of local institutions and the needs for integration with the area and the surrounding countryside.  In fact, studies performed on the traffic system for this area showed that a new motorway section would on average be subject to daily traffic flows of some 40,000 vehicles once open and nearly 60,000 vehicles once at capacity, since it would attract a significant amount of long-distance traffic and also be able to count on better traffic flow distribution entering and leaving the main cities.
This Italian road and motorway infrastructure is one of the first examples of self-financed infrastructure, where all of the resources needed to execute the project were obtained through banks and financing made available by the partners.  The earnings from the investment will come exclusively from tolls.
Opengineering Srl was in the main part in charge of executive design for the electrical, mechanical and special installations on the interconnection section of the BREBEMI with the Outer Eastern Bypass, Milan.
Specifically, the systems were the following:

  • Video surveillance system
  • Fog signals
  • Hydraulic controls
  • Data network
  • LV power system

Specifically, the hydraulic controls were designed with the specific function of collecting and treating the water from the motorway platform and therefore, accidental spills, with both the function of retarding and primary sedimentation.  They allow controlled discharge into the natural waterways of all water falling onto the road network.  To make this possible, a closed pipeline has been created connecting the drainage system to the road concerned (channels, drains and gutters) as far as the check point in which the hydraulic controls are to be installed.
A communication system is envisaged, designed with the main aim of guaranteeing maximum flexibility and safe operation, even in case of critical events.  Therefore, the communication system designed is formed by wired connections and active network systems.  The wired part stands out in the trunk system and the local system at the interchanges, since the trunk is comprised of three fibre optic cables in line along the route of the TEEM.  The first cable, representing the primary trunk has been laid along the north carriage; the second and third, representing the secondary trunk have been laid along the two carriages, north and south.  The primary trunk, only affects the main sites, while the secondary trunk affects all sites, alternatively to the cabling for the north and south carriages.
